Astros' Jose Altuve strips down to argue with umpire over missed call

Altuve argued with the judge. But it was his appearance to say his true feelings, and the removal of his cleats and socks brought him out.

One of the most bizarre plays of the 2024 MLB season was when the Astros second baseman was ejected in the ninth inning of Tuesday's game against the Padres by a ground ball that appeared to fracture his big toe on.

The Astros' Altuve removed his cleats and socks and pointed to where the ball hit his wrist, as Houston took a still-hot field in the ninth. Miller ejected him immediately from the game.

"It was a foul ball," Altuve told MLB.com. “It was obvious. I wanted to face Robert Suarez. I knew he was great, but I wanted to fight him.”

The game went to the bottom of the ninth knotted 3-3 after Altuve grounded out trying to score from second base.

The Astros were particularly incensed that Miller went ahead with his call without consulting his fellow umpires.

Even instant replay couldn't save the Astros. The out stood because the foul ball call was unreviewable.

Houston manager Joe Espada was demoted along with Altuve. In extra innings,

Astros' Kyle Tucker hit the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th. Altuve's colleagues didn't suffer de-feet.
