49ers Brock Purdy Messages "Obsessive" Week 1 Breakout Star Strongly
By Saloni
Thanks to a commanding 32-19 victory over the Jets on Monday Night Football, the 2024 season got off to a solid start for the defending
NFC champs despite a crazy offseason marked with three of the most prominent 49ers stars missing major time with either contract
troubles or injuries. And the name that really caught my attention was Jordan Mason, which has been basically boiling in the background for the past two years.
As he filled in for the injured Christian McCaffrey, who has been suffering with calf and Achilles tendon issues that bothered him throughout the preseason, the 49ers signed in 2022 pounded the Jets defense for 147 yards on 28 runs with a touchdown.
Few were happier for Mason than quarterback Brock Purdy, who entered the NFL concurrently with him and was almost passed, too; Purdy was selected with the last choice of that year. Mason should keep pushing, Purdy said.
Pundy told reporters following the game, "Just coming in, rookie year, trying to learn the playbook together, he and I would meet a lot and go through everything."
"He has therefore always had that learning urge. Knowing that we were guys—that I was the final choice and he was not drafted—knowing that we would not have many chances and we had to maximize the ones we did get.
"He earned it, man." Man, he is the kind of man it was not given, thus to see him go and perform what he did tonight makes me very glad. I also know he will keep on pushing.
The injuries to McCaffrey, a late scratch for Week 1, gave Mason chances to take over the top job with the 49ers this offseason.
